A decade dedicated to the study of a remarkable NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) program experiment, resulted in the ultimate in comfort technology – TEMPUR® material – the amazing space age mattress material
In the 1970s, the NASA R & D Program was experimenting with a material that would conform to the exact body weight and shape of any astronaut. The material, if successful, would significantly reduce the effects of the enormous G-forces and vibrations experienced by astronauts during lift off, flight and descent into the earth’s atmosphere. The project was highly promising, but the material proved to be difficult and expensive to manufacture and susceptible to durability problems.
NASA released this raw material formula to the industrial world in the early 1980s. Fagerdala World Foams seized the opportunity to refine this highly promising product, realizing the tremendous potential of this unique pressure relieving material. Fagerdala experimented with the product for almost a decade and perfected its composition and durability.
The result: An open-celled, viscoelastic, temperature sensitive material that adjusts to the body weight and temperature of the user and absorbs most vibrations for unsurpassed comfort and support. The revolutionary TEMPUR material reduces the pressure points that may contribute to poor sleep; tossing and turning; and aches and pains. A true space-age body support material was born. The open cell was a challenging strategic goal and necessary to help air flow through the mattress, which is a helpful feature and may assist with dissipating body heat and vapor. TEMPUR material consistently meets this demanding performance standard, a unique achievement.

In May of 1998, NASA invited Tempur-Pedic, Inc. to attend a press conference in their honor. Tempur-Pedic, Inc. was awarded with a plaque of recognition from NASA. In return, Tempur-Pedic, Inc. presented NASA administrator Daniel Goldin with it’s one-millionth pillow.
