Comparison of Waterbeds, Air mattresses,
Foam mattresses, Latex mattresses, and
Tempur-Pedic Memory Foam Mattresses,
and more…
Choosing a mattress is a personal issue. We all have our own likes and dislikes when it comes to defining ‘comfort’. Artisans Custom Mattress, has spent a lot of time examining what makes a great mattress using scientific methods and experienced testing. This research was conducted before we opened our doors for business and we are proud to say that our decision to work with Tempur-Pedic® beds has proven to be the right choice.
These charts paint an interesting picture of the mattress industry. From a timeline perspective it makes sense that first attempts at creating beds were based on the materials that were available, such as the horse hair mattresses. The next logical step involved using that ‘new’ spring technology of the 1920’s. Thus the inner spring mattress was born and sadly still persists today. While ‘bent nails’ were a major advancement during the 20’s, scientific achievements’ have come a long way since then.

While air mattresses may have been created for their portability and convenience in the 1930’s, they did stumble upon an important principle. Namely a mattress should conform to your body. It took another 30 years before folks started filling these glorified balloons with water in order to create the ‘modern’ waterbed. Both of these mattress do a good job of conforming to your body. However, the ‘hammock effect’ may negate much of their comfort. That is, the heavy body parts sink while the lighter body parts float. Chambers were added to reduce the hammock effect but the laws of physics prevail and non-compressible fluids will move to area of least resistance. Yet another issue is they trap the body’s heat and moisture between you and the ‘balloon skin” of the mattress. The mattress pad was developed to help dissipate the body’s heat and vapor away from the sleeper. Unfortunately, the mattress pad significantly reduces air mattresses, and waterbeds’, ability to conform and support your body. Therefore, the benefits of these types of mattresses are significantly reduced.

Foam Rubber mattresses (& Foam Mattresses in general), Futon mattresses, Latex mattresses have all come on the seen starting in the ‘60’s. Again these beds are striving to follow the ‘conform & support’ principle. Again, they all rely on mattress pads to dissipate body’s heat and vapor. Latex beds and Foam Rubber beds beneficial aspects are reduced due to the ‘mattress pad effect’.

Enter the Tempur-Pedic mattress company! They started with technology developed by NASA! Should we give you a moment to let that sink in? The world class scientists at NASA wanted to develop a material that would conform and support the astronauts while they experience major G forces and a very bumpy ride. This material could not cut circulation, it had to promote it. They created memory foam. More exactly, they created heat and pressure activated visco-elastic polyurethane. This means that the material ‘melts’ away from hot spots (pressure points). Tempur-Pedic scientists improved upon the NASA material with a open celled structure allowing body heat and vapor to pass thru the same material that is conforming & supporting the body. No mattress pads! The Tempur-Pedic mattress company was awarded the NASA seal for Space Technology for their ability to develop NASA’s idea into a consumer product. No other company has enjoyed such recognition in the memory foam industry. The Tempur-Pedic recipe has been a closely guarded trade secret that no other company can match.

In fact, Tempur-Pedic mattresses work so well that the mattress industry has been flooded with imitators. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, unfortunately these less effective companies have tarnished memory mattresses good name. Yet, many companies are still trying to get on the band wagon by offering their knock-off versions of Tempur-Pedic beds. Major inner spring manufacturers offer memory foam toppers; the purple bed company is trying to capitalize on these principles. The Bed in a Bag company is giving it the ‘old college try’, emphasis on try. None of these ‘memory foam’ companies have the magic recipe developed by the Tempur-Pedic scientists.
All of these imitators can easily be spotted by their price tag. In the memory foam business, you get what you pay for. The trusted proven, Tempur-Pedic brand is a guarantee of excellence.
